1099-K threshold for 2027
The federal rule is back to over $20,000 and over 200 transactions. The amount on the form is still not your income.
The federal threshold
Payment apps and online marketplaces (third-party settlement organizations, in IRS terms) send Form 1099-K when, in a calendar year, you receive more than $20,000 in gross payments for goods or services and have more than 200 transactions. Both conditions have to be met. This is the rule as restored by the 2025 tax law (P.L. 119-21), replacing the lower thresholds that had been scheduled.
Examples with made-up numbers
Etsy shop: 23,400 in sales, 260 orders → over both limits → 1099-K expected
Reseller: 24,000 in sales, 150 orders → only one limit → no federal 1099-K
Freelancer paid by app: 8,000, 40 payments → no federal 1099-K
Card payments are different. If you accept cards through a processor that reports payment card transactions, those can be reported on a 1099-K with no minimum. Check what your processor does.
State thresholds can be lower
Some states require platforms to send a 1099-K at much lower amounts for residents of that state. So you may receive a 1099-K even below the federal limits, and the IRS may get a copy too. Look up your state's current rule rather than relying on the federal one.
What the amount on the form means
Box 1a shows the gross amount of payments: before platform fees, refunds, shipping labels or discounts you paid for. It is not your profit and often not even your net sales. When you file, you report gross receipts on Schedule C and deduct fees, refunds and costs separately, so the starting number matches the form and the deductions explain the difference.
No form does not mean no tax
All business income is taxable whether or not a 1099-K arrives. With the higher threshold, many small sellers will not get one. Your own records are what you report from; the form is only a check the IRS can match against.
Personal payments
Money from friends for a shared dinner, rent split with a roommate or selling your own used things at a loss is generally not taxable income. If such payments end up on a 1099-K, keep records that show what they were. The IRS instructions for Form 1040 explain how to report a 1099-K amount that is not income, so you are not taxed on it. Using separate accounts or tagging payments as personal in the app avoids most of this.
When the form arrives
Platforms generally send 1099-Ks by January 31. For 2027 payments that is January 31, 2028. Check it against your records the day it arrives; errors are easier to fix with the platform in February than in April.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1099-K threshold for 2027?
Federally, more than $20,000 in gross payments and more than 200 transactions in the year from a payment app or marketplace. Some states use lower thresholds.
Do I have to pay tax if I do not get a 1099-K?
Yes. All business income is taxable whether or not a form is issued. The form only reports what the platform paid you.
Why is my 1099-K higher than what I made?
Because it shows gross payments before fees, refunds, shipping labels and discounts. You report the gross and deduct those costs on Schedule C.
