Craft fair break-even calculator
Before paying for a booth, check how many sales it takes just to cover your costs.
The formula
break-even units = fixed costs / (price - variable cost per unit)
Example with made-up numbers
Booth fee 120, transport 30, display 50: fixed costs 200. You sell at 25 and each item costs you 10 to make: margin 15 per item. Break-even = 200 / 15 = 14 items. Item 15 is the first profit.
What to include
- Fixed: booth fee, transport, display, card reader fees if flat.
- Variable: materials, packaging, percentage payment fees.
- Your time, if you want the event to pay you too.
Use it to price
If break-even is more items than you can realistically sell, raise the price, cut costs or skip the event.
