Inventory spreadsheet for a small business
Two tables and three formulas tell you what you have, what to reorder and how much cash is sitting on the shelf.
Table 1: products
- SKU and product name.
- Unit cost and selling price.
- Opening stock and reorder point.
Table 2: movements
- Date, SKU, type (purchase or sale) and quantity.
- Never overwrite the stock number by hand: log the movement instead.
The formulas
stock on hand = opening stock + purchases - salesreorder = IF(stock on hand <= reorder point, "REORDER", "")cash in stock = stock on hand x unit cost
Purchases and sales per SKU come from SUMIFS over the movements table.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting returns, samples and damaged items: they are movements too.
- Tracking units sold but not profit per product.
- Not comparing the monthly plan with what really happened.
General information, not financial, tax or legal advice. Examples use made-up numbers.
