Paycheck to paycheck budget

The goal is not a perfect budget. It is to get one paycheck ahead, so each check pays the next two weeks instead of the last two.

What paycheck to paycheck really means

When money runs out before payday, it is usually not one big problem but a timing one: bills, groceries and gas all come before the next check, and the account hits zero for a few days. Overdraft fees, a late fee or a payday loan then make the next period worse. Planning by paycheck shows exactly where the gap is and how big it is.

Step 1: plan the next four paychecks

Write down each payday, what it will bring in and every bill due before the following payday. Add groceries, gas and other flexible spending per paycheck. You will see which check is short and by how much.

Example with made-up numbers
Paycheck A: 1,900 in · bills 1,520 · flexible 400 · left −20
Paycheck B: 1,900 in · bills 380 · flexible 400 · left 1,120
Over a month there is money left; the problem is that paycheck A runs out first.

Step 2: close the gap in the short paycheck

Step 3: build a one-paycheck buffer

The buffer is the money that sits in checking so that each paycheck pays future bills instead of catching up on past ones. Start with a small target: the amount the short paycheck is missing, then a week of expenses, then a full paycheck. Feed it with any extra: a tax refund, a third paycheck in a month, overtime. Once the buffer reaches one paycheck, the anxiety of payday mostly disappears.

Step 4: cut the costs of being short

Step 5: then the next goals

With a buffer in place, start a $1,000 starter emergency fund, then a few sinking funds for the yearly bills that used to cause the crisis. Each step makes the next short period less likely.

Make the plan visible

Keep one page with the next four paychecks and update it every payday: actual pay, bills paid, what is left. Fifteen minutes on payday replaces a lot of checking the balance with dread.

Enter your own pay and bills in the paycheck budget calculator to see which paycheck is short. The biweekly budget template guide shows how to assign bills to paychecks, and the emergency fund plan covers the next step.

Frequently asked questions

How do I stop living paycheck to paycheck?

Plan each paycheck, find the short one, close the gap by moving a due date or saving from the lighter check, and build a buffer of one paycheck in checking.

What is a paycheck buffer?

Money kept in checking so that each paycheck pays the bills ahead instead of catching up. A full buffer equals one paycheck.

Is it better to budget monthly or by paycheck?

If you are paid biweekly or weekly, budgeting by paycheck shows the timing problems a monthly budget hides, such as rent and a car payment landing before the same check.
