Three-paycheck months in 2027
Paid every other Friday? Two or three months of 2027 bring a third paycheck. Here is when, and how to use it.
Why some months have three paychecks
Biweekly pay means every 14 days, which adds up to 26 paydays in most years: two per month plus two extra. Those extras land in the months where the calendar lets three paydays fit. Every few years, the calendar lines up so a year has 27 paydays.
2027 dates, by schedule
Biweekly schedules on Fridays fall on one of two alternating Fridays. Check your last pay stub to see which one is yours.
Schedule 1: first payday Friday, January 1, 2027
27 paychecks in 2027 · three-paycheck months: January, July, December
(January 1, 15, 29 · July 2, 16, 30 · December 3, 17, 31)
Schedule 2: first payday Friday, January 8, 2027
26 paychecks in 2027 · three-paycheck months: April, October
(April 2, 16, 30 · October 1, 15, 29)
If you are paid on another weekday, count forward in steps of 14 days from your first payday of the year. If January 1 is a bank holiday where you work, your employer may pay the day before; that moves one paycheck into 2026, so check your stub.
Is a 27th paycheck a raise?
Not really. If you are salaried, your annual salary is usually split into 26 or 27 pieces. In a 27-paycheck year, some employers pay the same per-check amount and the year simply has one more; others divide the salary by 27, making each check a little smaller. Ask payroll which applies, because it changes your per-paycheck budget.
How to plan for the extra checks
The key is building your normal budget on two paychecks a month. Then the third paycheck in a month arrives with no bills assigned to it, and you can give the whole amount a job before it arrives.
- Build a buffer: if you live paycheck to paycheck, the first extra paycheck can become the one-paycheck buffer that ends the cycle.
- Emergency fund: one extra check often reaches the $1,000 starter milestone or a full month of essentials.
- Debt: send it to the balance with the highest interest rate.
- Sinking funds: the December extra check, on Schedule 1, lands right before holiday spending and January bills.
- Next year's costs: insurance renewals or registration due early in 2028.
Example with made-up numbers
Take-home per paycheck: 2,150
Schedule 1 extra checks: January 29, July 30, December 31 → 6,450 a year with no bills attached
Plan: January → buffer · July → emergency fund · December → sinking funds for 2028
Watch the bills that follow the calendar
Bills that are due every month will still be due in the months with three paychecks, but some expenses are per paycheck: retirement contributions, union dues or a health plan deducted from each check. In a 27-paycheck year those are deducted 27 times; check the stub of the extra paycheck.
The paycheck budget calculator flags the three-paycheck months for your own payday and shows what each of your next four checks covers. For the overall setup, see the biweekly budget template.
