How the estimate works

Self-employment tax is 15.3% of 92.35% of your net profit (the Social Security part stops at the $192,300 wage base, counting your W-2 wages). Income tax uses the 2027 brackets after the standard deduction and a simplified 20% QBI deduction. Safe harbor: pay at least the smaller of 90% of this year's tax or 100% of last year's (110% if your 2026 AGI was over $150,000), minus withholding, and you avoid the underpayment penalty. Example: single, $54,000 profit, $42,000 W-2 with $3,360 withheld, $9,800 tax in 2026: projected tax $16,592, safe harbor $1,610 a quarter, $3,308 a quarter to owe about $0.

When are 2027 estimated tax payments due?

April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2027, and January 18, 2028 for the last quarter.

What is the safe harbor for estimated taxes?

If you pay at least 90% of this year's tax or 100% of last year's tax (110% if last year's AGI was over $150,000) through withholding and on-time estimates, you generally avoid the underpayment penalty, even if you owe more in April.

Can I raise my W-2 withholding instead?

Yes. Withholding counts as paid evenly through the year, so a new W-4 with extra withholding can replace some or all of the quarterly payments.
