How the math works

Each ingredient costs amount used ÷ package size × package price. Overnight oats for 2: 0.25 lb of a $1.60 1-lb bag of oats ($0.40) + half a $4.90 tub of yogurt ($2.45) + a quarter of a $4.50 bag of berries ($1.13) + 0.1 of a $3.80 gallon of milk ($0.38) = $4.36 a batch, $2.18 a serving, $8.71 for 4 people. A $180 weekly budget is $780 a month (× 52 ÷ 12) and $6.43 per person per day for 4.

How do you calculate the cost of a recipe?

Add the cost of the part of each package you use: amount used ÷ package size × price. Divide by the servings to get the cost per serving.

Why multiply the weekly budget by 52 and divide by 12?

A month has about 4.33 weeks, not 4. Multiplying by 4 would leave about a month a year out of the budget.

What is a good grocery budget per person?

It depends on where you live, ages and diets. Start from what your receipts say you spend, then set a target a little lower.
